Blizzard Entertainment is addressing one of World of Warcraft Shadowlands’s most controversial systems in the next patch. The area of effect (AoE) target cap is being reworked in Patch 9.1.5, Blizzard detailed in a Blue Post on Sept. 1.

The cap will be removed and a new system will be implemented where reduced damage will hit targets past five.

The reduced damage will scale based on how many targets are in combat with the players, doing less per hit on a pack with more enemies in it.

Meanwhile, patch 9.1.5 continues its path of pleading with the playerbase to please love the game again because we can change, baby. See, the AoE cap is gone now, so now AoE abilities work against any size of group but just deal reduced damage past five enemies. A developer note in the full patch notes explains the reason for the change:

“We've received a lot of comments that these abilities, not hitting enemies in their range at all, create a sensation issue for WoW combat, but it's also an issue for trivial encounters like legacy cultivation content,” states the patch.

“Along with other changes, we set out to move away from ‘pull as many enemies as possible, use all your cooldowns and delete them’ as the predominant strategy across various forms of content,” Blizzard explained.

Not much changed and players found ways around this, meaning that fewer and fewer classes were brought to mythic+ groups as they didn't have the damage to pull massive.

This change still lets those classes who were always target capped like a fury warrior perform well on 4-5 targets, and those who are uncapped take advantage of larger pulls.

The most immediate fallout of the ongoing Activision-Blizzard lawsuit has been the removal of numerous references to now-former employees directly named or implicated in the suit, and the latest hotfix has removed a number of such references in World of Warcraft. Jonathan LeCraft, Jesse McCree, and Luis Barriga have had the vast majority of their references removed, with NPC names changed and items renamed. Worth noting is that there is still one reference to McCree in the game with the Draenei city of Mac’Aree and a few NPCs whose names have not yet been changed, so there’s still some work to be done in this department, but the overall reference volume is going down.

Others have resigned as Blizzard continues to grapple with the aftermath of a lawsuit in the state of California accusing the developer of harassment and discrimination against women. These allegations led to the removal of developer references from the game and the departure of several Blizzard veterans, including former president J. Allen Brack and former leadership-level designer Jesse McCree.
