- Psyonix revealed its intention to remove loot crates from Rocket League

Back in August, Psyonix revealed its intention to remove loot crates from Rocket League. Now, the developer has released some information about the system that will be replacing Crates. Going forward, instead of Crates, you'll receive Blueprints. This update lands in December.

Blueprints are intended to give players more transparency in terms of what they're purchasing. After you play a match of Rocket League, you'll have a chance to get a Blueprint. When you receive one, it'll show you exactly what you can craft from it, along with a set price. Once it's in your inventory, you can either choose to pay to craft a Blueprint right then and there, or you can leave it in your inventory and choose to craft it later. Blueprints, like Crates, will come with special attributes like Certified and Painted.

Credits will also be required to purchase Rocket League's premium Rocket Pass tier, and to acquire items from the game's new rotating item shop. The latter, says Psyonix, will feature both new items and legacy Crate content that players might have missed previously.

While some applauded Psyonix's decision to remove 'blind box' rewards from Rocket League, others felt burned. Under the current model, it is possible to obtain coveted items without spending money: Essentially, those willing to buy keys generate a marketplace for those willing to hoard random drops and make trades but unwilling to pay. Someone has to purchase the keys in circulation, but it doesn't have to be the person who ultimately uses them. If the new currency isn't tradeable, that all changes.

The developer is also changing Rocket League's trade-in system to ensure paid-for items obtained from Blueprints can't be traded, effectively preventing the items from accruing any real-world value.  Once the Blueprints system goes live in December, players will be able to purchase them using credits, the new premium currency replacing keys. At that point, player keys will automatically be converted into credits the first time they log in to Rocket League, and each remaining loot box they own will be converted into a blue print.
